Sensation and Perception
This course emphasizes theories and research regarding the neural and cognitive processes involved in sensation and perception. Sensation occurs when sensory receptors detect sensory stimuli. Perception involves the organization, interpretation, and conscious experience of those sensations. Perception is affected by several factors, including beliefs, values, prejudices, culture, and life experiences. This course will also focus on identifying the mechanisms that change physical stimuli into neural information that our sensory systems can process, the major brain areas involved in sensory processing and perceptual formations, and the techniques and theories used to analyze sensory and perceptual phenomena.
